The majority of families and educators across Ontario experience the school day as two separate systems with the current before and after-school program structure. This split can create gaps in continuity, access, staffing, and support, despite growing evidence that children benefit most from integrated, consistent learning and care throughout the day.
The “seamless day” model highlights a different approach: one where education and child care are aligned to create a cohesive experience for children, families, and educators. A seamless day integrates kindergarten and before-and-after school programs so that children experience continuity in relationships, learning, and care, while families benefit from more stable and accessible options.
B2C2 collaborated with the Atkinson Centre, CUPE, and CUPW to create two informational videos to bring this model to life. While reports and policy discussions are important, we heard that families, school boards, and child care providers need clearer, more practical examples of what a seamless day actually looks like. The videos are designed to translate research into real-world stories, showing how integrated programs can improve children’s learning experiences, reduce disruptions in their day, and strengthen collaboration between educators and early childhood professionals.
