In Ontario, we have a severe shortage of child care spaces. This situation is even more pronounced in small and rural communities often described as “child care deserts”. One approach to rapidly increasing the number of available spaces in all communities is modular child care centres: a system of construction that is faster and simpler than traditional methods.
Colleen Sklar, CEO of JohnQ Public has been the driving force behind a modular child care construction program. Colleen will show us how the modular program in Manitoba works and how it could be adopted in Ontario.
Robert Froom, retired child care architect and member of the Building Blocks for Child Care Advisory Group will be on hand to comment on the program.
After the speakers there will be lots of time for questions and answers.
JOHNQ PUBLIC
JohnQ Public is a corporation founded by a group of Manitoba municipalities and First Nations that has created an exciting program of building modular child care in the province, known as “Daycare in a Box”.
Each facility is partially prefabricated and trucked to the community and assembled into the finished product. Construction of the buildings began in January 2023 and in just 18 months, 22 day care centres with 1,718 child care spaces will have been built.
